Let there be light

Many a times it becomes necessary to forego logic in pursuit of hope. Hope, as they say, is the best thing, probably the best of things. However, when does hope end and pragmatism kick in? Ravi had been comprehending the same for a very long time. So long that he didn’t even recall when it all started. He liked to think of himself as a practical man, but was he? No practical man would have ventured into the unknown, against all odds, and with the least of preparations like he had done. The name his father had bestowed upon him translated to “The Sun” in the old tongue. It was a rather well played pun; after all, naming your son after the sun itself was a bold move. Ravi had stood up against all odds his entire life. He had developed a penchant for doing things that would otherwise be deemed grueling and onerous. However, today, viewing the blank space in front of him, that fondness seemed to be fading. He turned around and looked at the circular shape which rea...

The Truth of Nations

"We are global citizens, members of the same race being torn apart by the theory of nations, bifurcated and fragmented into societies on the basis of this so called nationalism. Can we not let go of borders, of the hatred that our governments make us feel towards other geographies! Can we not rise and proclaim that the vicissitudes of jingoism have taken us far, but no more!" As I went through these lines, a strong sense of moral epiphany grasped its clutches around my mind. The understanding of sharing an evolution with seven billion people can have that effect on the minds of the uninitiated. Why do we need borders? The planet does not exhibit any lines drawn across its face and chest. Is it necessary then to draw and divide ? Can we not live together as a species rather than living as nations? In the times that we face, it seems like a Utopian idea too far from reality. A country in itself seems like a Machiavellian machination cooked up to satisfy the ambivalence of huma...

A glance at God's countenance

We were tired to our bones. The cool breeze felt like a relief to the soul and the comforters felt really comfortable. We were witnessing fatigue at its worst. In a group of nine, I could not spot a single soul who had enough verve to walk another mile if asked to. Someone considered the station’s waiting room to be an ideal place for rest. Few could, however, muster enough strength to walk up the platform’s dais and pull up their quilts, for resting under the tree with a gaze fixed at the stars has been mankind’s natural call since eternity. Restless people like me, to whom the buzzing mosquitoes were a greater menace than Satan himself, considered wandering along the length and breadth of the little train stoppage a far reasonable and soothing option. I had barely walked for 50 meters towards the exit when I heard it coming. I turned around to find that the sleeping souls had become vigorous. Many had already been preparing themselves for the protocol. We knew no one would repriman...
